It didn't settle for being a dating simulator, farming simulator, or life simulator. However, my favorite thing about this game is just how complex it was for its time. They take the role of mysterious creatures who live under your farm, upgrading your tools from time to time. The fantasy aspect isn't as outspoken as some of the later games, but it's still there in the form of Harvest Sprites, who were actually quite creepy in this game. Aside from that however, there's not much wrong with it. The only major downfall I can think of is that you get cut off at two and a half years. The characters are interesting, the town feels vibrant and alive, and the gameplay is top notch.
The original Harvest Moon was a fantastic game and still holds up well today.
